Making a map of India’s air quality

Select your map

Start typing to search for the Admin layer that you want to use for your basemap. The datasets are usually updated to the latest versions on the tool.

Add your data

  1. You can add data manually, but the simplest way is to upload a .csv file of you data that you have exported from Excel or Google Sheets.

If it’s a small dataset, you can even Copy-Paste the values in the space provided.

If you have a cleaned dataset in Google Sheets, you can set the worksheet to public and use the link directly. This is particularly useful if your data gets updated and you would like your map to dynamically update when the data changes. The data will be updated from the spreadsheet every time you open the chart in Datawrapper, but published charts will not update unless republished.

  1. Once the data is loaded, it is important to tell Datawrapper which columns to use for the visualisation. It is usually smart enough to detect the geometry columns if you name them properly to signify latitude and longitude.

Change the fields for symbol size and symbol colour to make the symbol visualisation of your data. You can also click on a column on the table to change what it is used for.

  1. In this case we want to visualise the max PM2.5 levels across stations. We can filter the data in Google Sheets for that purpose, so we only have what we want to visualise.

  1. The Data check is important to ensure that it is being read correctly by Datawrapper. In this case, negative or non-numeric values need to be excluded from the visualisation, which it will automatically do. However, this is also a good way to know how the tool expects the data to be formatted. It is always a good idea to do cleaning and formatting on the data end in your Google sheet.
