Making a map of India’s population density

Select your map

Start typing to search for the Admin layer that you want to use for your basemap. The datasets are usually updated to the latest versions on the tool.

Add your data

  1. You can add data manually, but the simplest way is to upload a .csv file of you data that you have exported from Excel or Google Sheets. If it’s a small dataset, you can even Copy-Paste the values in the space provided.

If you have a cleaned dataset in Google Sheets, you can set the worksheet to public and use the link directly. This is particularly useful if your data gets updated and you would like your map to dynamically update when the data changes. The data will be updated from the spreadsheet every time you open the chart in Datawrapper, but published charts will not update unless republished.

One thing to note here is that the first column is already populated with the names that the map identifies with. So if your data-key doesn’t match that of Datawrapper, there will be a mismatch while pairing up the data. One way to deal with this to copy-paste the name-keys from here and try to match it up at the source of your data. Alternative is to manually fix the mismatch that Datawrapper will flag on the check tab after the data is uploaded.

  1. Now that the data is uploaded, you have to tell Datawrapper which is the column for keys (column used to match with the state names) and values (the numbers to encode).

  1. In this case there are quite a few errors and mismatches, which needs to be fixed on the Check tab. Select the error field, and match it with the unused key from the Datawrapper list. Delete rows that you do not need.

Visualise

You can change the column which is used to visualise the colours. The critical step for a Choropleth is choosing a colour palette that works for the way the data is distributed.
